Inhabited Punico-Roman Street Of The Nymphs

Discovered in 1984, this sector of the ancient settlement of Lilybaeum offers a fascinating journey through the different phases of the city’s life, from its Punic foundation to the late imperial Roman period. Here parts of two insulae, separated by a cardo, one of the main roads of the urban layout of Lilybaeum, have been unearthed. In the northern insula, dating from the mid-4th century B.C., Punic wall structures and rectangular rooms were found adjacent to a courtyard with a rainwater collection system.
During the late Republican period (2nd-1st century B.C.), the northern insula was renovated, taking on the typical layout of Hellenistic houses, with decorated rooms and cocciopesto floors distributed around a tetrastyle atrium with impluvium. In the late imperial period, a new renovation led to a raising of the pavement and the redistribution of the rooms around a large peristyle.
